Be CALM Tier 1 Educator Training

Be a leader in bringing mindfulness and social-emotional learning to your learning community

A trained Be CALM educator builds supportive, responsive relationships with adolescents.

 

A trained Be CALM educator co-creates learning communities that nurture a sense of connectedness and belonging.

A trained Be CALM educator utilizes mindfulness and self-compassion to respond to stress and challenging situations with kindness and curiosity.

A trained Be CALM educator models the same social-emotional skills they are teaching and coaching adolescents to develop and strengthen.

Becoming a Trained Be CALM Teacher

The Be CALM Program is a mindfulness-based Social-Emotional Learning program for 6th - 9th graders with two levels (6th/7th and 8th/9th) of developmentally-appropriate curriculum that consist of 16 (45-minute) weekly lessons each.

The foundation of teaching mindfulness and social-emotional skills to adolescents is embodiment of them. The Be CALM Teacher training pathway is for educators who wish to model kindness, curiosity, nonjudgmental acceptance, and courage in the learning environment.

Step 1

Be CALM Mindfulness Practice Course

Format: Guided, Asynchronous

Duration: 4-5 hours over 4-6 weeks

*Participants will need to purchase either a digital copy or hard copy of the book Mindfulness in the Secondary Classroom (2019) by Patricia C. Broderick at their own expense.  

Educators begin the Be CALM Teacher Training pathway with a guided, asynchronous, virtual Be CALM Mindfulness Practice course. The time commitment for the course is approximately 3-4 hours over the course of 4-6 weeks. This course must be completed in order to teach the Be CALM Program student curriculum.

Course Objectives:

  • To gain an experiential understanding of mindfulness

  • To build a personal mindfulness practice

  • To increase knowledge about the benefits of mindfulness for adolescents and the supportive adults in their lives

  • To strengthen participants' social-emotional wellbeing as a foundation for teaching mindfulness and supporting adolescents' social-emotional skills development

 

Course content includes:

  • facilitation by an expert Be CALM instructor

  • video presentations

  • guided mindfulness practices

  • experiential insight activities and practices

  • guided discussions and reflections

  • written reflections

  • ongoing feedback from Be CALM course instructor

  • required readings, including the book Mindfulness in the Secondary Classroom (2019) by Patricia C. Broderick

Step 2

Be CALM Foundations Training

Format: Hybrid self-paced & in-person

Duration: 8-9 hours (1-2 hours self-paced virtual, 7 hours in-person)

The Be CALM Foundations training is a hybrid, multi-session, experiential training that increases self-awareness, broadens perspective, and cultivates curiosity to support adolescents' SEL skills development. Participants share and reflect on co-creating safe, supportive learning environments, strengthening connections with students, and responding with kindness and curiosity in challenging situations. Training components include self-paced learning and in-person training. 

Prerequisites: 

  • Enrollment in or completion of the Be CALM Mindfulness Practice Course

Training Objectives:

  1. To gain understanding of the Be CALM approach and principles 

  2. To engage in experiences that parallel those in the student curriculum

  3. To understand mindfulness and how its benefits for educators and adolescents

  4. To increase knowledge and enhance practices for:

  • Co-creating a supportive learning environment

  • Strengthening connections with and among students

  • Responding mindfully in the learning environment

Step 3

Be CALM Curriculum Training

Format: In-person

Duration: 7 hours (one day)

Following completion of the Be CALM Foundations training, participants are eligible to participate the Be CALM Curriculum Training. In this single-session, experiential, in-person training to teach the Be CALM curriculum, participants:

  • Become oriented to the 16-lesson student curriculum content, organization, and instructional methods

  • Gain familiarity with key concepts and skills in each lesson through experiential learning

  • Increase confidence in facilitating mindfulness practices

  • Practice teaching lesson activities and applying mindful teaching skills 

Upon completion of the Be CALM Mindfulness Practice Course, the Be CALM Foundations Training, and the Be CALM Curriculum Training, participants will receive the following curriculum materials:

  1. Paper copy and digital access to the Level 1 (grades 6-7) Be CALM Tier 1 Teacher Manual and Student Planbook

  2. Paper copy and digitial access to tLevel 2 (grades 8-9) Be CALM Tier 1 Teacher Manual and Student Planbook

  3. Be CALM Posters

  4. Access to online curriculum materials, including Be CALM forms and Powerpoint presentations for all Level 1 and Level 2 lessons

Prerequisites: 

  • Enrollment in or completion of the Be CALM Mindfulness Practice Course

  • Completion of the Be CALM Foundations Training

 

Training Objectives:

  1. Become oriented to the student curriculum content, organization, and instructional methods

  2. Gain familiarity with key concepts and skills in each lesson through experiential learning

  3. Increase confidence in facilitating mindfulness practices

  4. Practice teaching lesson activities and applying mindful teaching skills

  5. Generate ideas to optimize the impact of the curriculum for all students

Becoming a Certified Be CALM Teacher

Take another step in your training to become a Certified Be CALM Teacher. As a Certified Be CALM Teacher, you will be listed on our website and be eligible to pursue the Certified Be CALM Coach training pathway. 

Step 4

PLC Implementation Support Meetings

Format: Live, virtual

Duration: 45-minutes, 6x

The cost for this is paid separately from the Steps 1-3 training. 

Concurrent with teaching the full 16-lesson Be CALM student curriculum, participants attend at least 6 (45-minute) implementation support meetings that are offered in a professional learning community with other educators who are teaching the Be CALM student curriculum. Implementation Support Meetings are facilitated by an expert Be CALM Trainer or a Certified Be CALM Coach. Objectives of these support meetings are to:

  • Generate ideas to optimize the impact of the curriculum for all students

  • Support trained participants to model mindfulness and apply mindful teaching skills in the learning environment

  • Strengthen participants' co-regulation skills (building strong teacher-student relationships, co-creating safe supportive environments)

 

Prerequisites: 

  • Completion of the Be CALM Mindfulness Practice Course

  • Completion of the Be CALM Foundations Training

  • Completion of the Be CALM Curriculum Training

SCHOOL-WIDE IMPLEMENTATION OPPORTUNITIES

We offer on-site trainings for schools that are interested in implementation across one or more grade levels with at least 10 staff participants.
